We start with the maximum modulus principle for holomorphic functions and deduce Hadamard's three line theorem and Hadamard's three circle theorem.
Then we pursue the question, which of these properties are shared by solutions of elliptic partial differential equations.
Without proof we state a Carleman estimate and an interpolation inequality which follows. Applications thereof are discussed, time permitting, at the end of the talk.
