L-functions, like the Riemann zeta-function and Dirichlet L-series, encode a lot of arithmetic information. There are wide-ranging conjectures, only proved in a few cases, relating their values at integer points to arithmetic invariants. I will survey some of these conjectures, and describe some new evidence (joint work with Jan Nekovář).
