Of all of the baits available to 1x8' nylon sling fishermen there is probably no much more popular and effective bait than dwell bait. The interesting thing about using reside bait is that although many anglers do it, very few do it as proficiently as they could. The biggest problem most anglers have when it comes to reside bait is rigging their live bait successfully.

Rigging stay bait in the most effective manner is of the utmost importance when using bait to try to entice a fish. This is especially true when you are dealing with larger, a lot more experienced fish. As my fishing mentor used to say, "Large fish don't become large by being stupid". The point is that large fish of any species have seen many different methods of baiting a hook and been caught (probably multiple times) in the past, so fooling them becomes more and a lot more difficult. This is why rigging bait proficiently is so important.

This is where bait rigs come into play. For the purposes of this article I'm going to focus on freshwater fish. There are all kinds of bait rigs available to saltwater fishermen, but in this article I will focus on reside bait rigs for the freshwater angler. Whether you are fishing with a bobber in a lake, drifting a are living worm for trout in a river, or bottom fishing for catfish rigging your bait proficiently means that you will get a lot more bites, and thus have the opportunity to hook a lot more fish.

The biggest key with live bait rigs is that the bait is presented in the most natural way possible. With many types of bait this can be accomplished by using a set of gang hooks. These bait rigs are simply a pair of small hooks tied back to back and attached to your line using a small swivel. These rigs are effective in almost all freshwater fishing situations such as; under a bobber, drifting a dwell worm in a river, or bottom fishing.

Another key point when fishing bait rigs is that your bait no only is presented in a natural manner, but also be as lively as possible. Many live bait anglers make the mistake of killing (or almost killing) their reside bait by rigging their bait ineffectively. They hook their live bait in such a way that it tends to die quickly, thus defeating the purpose of using dwell bait. Have you ever seen someone hook a reside worm over and over again on a size 4 hook, creating what I like to call a "worm ball"? When rigged this way the worm is neither rigged naturally nor lively for long and tends to only be effective for smaller, additional inexperienced fish.

The bottom line is that when it comes to bait rigs for freshwater fishing, gang hooks are hard to beat. If you like to fish with bait, these fishing rigs should be added to your fishing repertoire sooner, rather than later.
