From increasing health care costs to a growth in the quantity of Americans who lack health insurance policy, there are many health care conditions that are attracting significant attention in Congress.

But, some say there is one important dimension that does not get adequate notice: the adequacy of the allied healthcare work force. Besides medical practioners, nurses and pharmacists, these experts would be the personnel engaged in patient care in hospitals. In addition they work in a wide array of other health care settings.

A rise in technology advances, retirements, demand and other opportunities for allied health students have put a stress on the educational pipeline. In accordance with the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions, a company representing allied health training in the U.S., a vivid example of this disturbing trend could be found among the allied health professions.

For instance, although a top proportion of treatment furnished in a hospital is accompanied by medical laboratory tests, the medical technologists who perform these procedures are encountering a personnel shortage that is just as serious - or even worse than - what afflicts the national nurse shortage.

As a means of handling the problem, ASAHP is working with other agencies in the development of legislation known as S. 473, the Allied Health Professions Reinvestment Act of 2005, and H.R. 215, a companion bill. Presented to Congress in 2005, this proposed legislation was created to give an answer for your allied health work force problems.

If some thing isn't done soon, the organization cautions that there will be an alarming escalation in adverse events affecting patients because of an inadequate supply of allied health caregivers.

The word 'allied health' was coined by the federal government in 1966, when legislation was needed to treat severe work power shortages among health and health-related professions such as physical therapy.
