Stop Spam Comments with Cookies for Comments

Spam comments are the bane of many WordPress website owners. Automated comments fly in, full of gibberish and self-serving links headed back to highly questionable sites that you certainly don’t want your readers to stumble onto.

You can reserve the right to review comments before they are seen, but the sheer volume of them at a busy site can quickly become overwhelming.

I spent we’ll more than an hour just yesterday, skimming through 442 (!) comments left on my church website. At the conclusion, I found that every sing ple one was a spam comment, ranging from random text to hate-filled rhetoric. Over an hour of my life spent fussing with the work of bots and idiots!

It was irritating and a total waste of time. Therefore, plugins have been developed to cull through the spam comments and dramatically decrease the number that you’ll need to manually review.

Later in the afternoon yesterday, I was watching a YouTube video where the famous Matt Cutts, who leads the team at Google that works ’round the clock to combat spam comments, junky websites etc. he was addressing a group,of WordPress site administrators and showed an on-screen display of the plugins installed at his own personal blog. There were no more than six in total.

But one that he spoke at length about is a plugin named Cookies for Comments. It uses a timing technology to isolate these automated (robotic) spam comments and shunt them off to a proper graveyard. What remains are the ‘real’ comments that have all the characteristics of having been posted by human beings.

Cookies for Comments is completely free and a terrific way to stop spam comments before you see them. It’s not perfect, but is closer to total accuracy than other popular tools like Akismet (at least in my experience, and I make it a mission to stop spam comments!). Used in conjunction with Akismet, which is also free for personal use and can stop spam comments with a complementary approach, you’ll have a powerful one-two punch in the war against spam.
