We study real quasi resonant modes (approximate eigenpairs) of a non self-adjoint spectral problem in acoustic scattering. For this class of problems one can prove that the relevant resolvent has only complex poles (eigenvalues), which cluster close to the real axis. A consequence of this clustering is the emergence of many real ``almost'' eigenvalue eigenvector pairs with the small residue. These modes correspond to the so called whispering gallery modes. Mathematically, these are strong (in the energy norm sense) fields localised near the boundary of the domain and their rigorous numerical analysis is the focus of this study. We discuss stability and efficiency issue related to the numerical computing of such modes. We use boundary element methods to discretize the Fredholm valued operator function and use randomised low rank solution method to solve the associated dense linear systems.
